NOTE: This letter is NOT meant to be offensive. The tone of this letter was not meant to instigate anger or otherwise, but is merely a plea to consider needed change. My purpose isn't at all to take away from the hard work that has been put into the various workings of the MUD - I appreciate everything you do. This shouldn't be taken the wrong way, you guys do great and I hope you can appreciate a discussion on something that some feel might be taking away from the MUD's greatness. Over my very lengthy play time here I've seen a variety of changes in the workings of the White Tower. To start, I think that the differentiation of chores reduction in tasks, and so forth have all added to enhance the experience of the Tower instead of reducing it to daily monotony. A large part of the MUD is based on player activity, some of which has been overcome in the White Tower. Fame votes become hard to get when we go through dips in our player activity on the MUD, but Shawnyve has usually been kind enough to reward graciously for hard work, and weaves to counter these MUD recessions. Now at the moment, my concern stems from the lack of a foreseeable payoff in dedicating so much time to relatively boring characters considering the other options presented in the MUD. This is largely in lieu of the weave changes. To start off, I wish to throw around the question of the whether or not we've distanced ourselves too much from normal circumstances. There are currently 8 Aes Sedai in the White Tower. All of them except for Lilla channels at Immense or above, I believe. Aorien perhaps is at moderate? I know I've appraised each of them at one point or another. When you look at the lower ranks you notice a far smaller populous of power houses, most recently we have Mahdi and Saera to my knowledge who channel above moderate, with Sapphira gaining her Excellent status only after a holiday alteration. So that's 2 or 3 out of 13 Novices and Accepteds who can channel above moderate, and then 6 or 7/8 Aes Sedai who channel above moderate. Hmm...seems to be a discrepancy! My opinion? They're manufactured characters for individuals who started out on this MUD. Now I don't know if they are played by Immortals, or what. But when you look at this population of individuals and the new weave changes, you see that the majority of new players are suffering deeply. My wish is for the Immortals to review their policy - don't allow yourselves to be distanced from the "average." I am an AVERAGE channeler, though I tend to see more moderates my expectations are that I or those just above me represent what will be the largest majority of the MUD. And yet, I find myself being horribly weak. I just tested out my air weaves against Kelysa. My strongest air weaves deal out 15 hp dmg on average, and in the process take out a substantial portion of my mana allowing me about 4 rounds of weaving before I'm spent or even further. That's about 60 hps I can get off a foe but at which point I've lost all of my moves because I've channeled past spent. When I came to the MUD I saw what appeared to be a removal of a lot of things that focused on materialism from other MUDS. You see the removal of a stats, and while getting a channeler is really hard, you'd have to be a fool to continue to strive for an Immense or Superior channeler because it's hard enough to just get any kind of channeler. And even so! You had some really cool weaves that still did some serious damage. Yet now, the channelers you're likely to get can't even kill a butterfly without exhausting themselves of saidar. In the books, we see the Immense channelers like Elayne Egwene and superior ones like Nynaeve and Cadsuane, but also the lesser ones as well like Moiraine, Elaida, etc. And we know for certain that these lesser channelers are far more adept in their One Power than becoming exhausted from killing a butterfly! At one point some of these weaves here used to really sizzle. Then changes were made that amplify the power of the upper echelon of channelers, while strongly reducing the smaller ones. I see absolutely no bonus at this point of spending YEARS in the White Tower before becoming Aes Sedai. I'm not asking to make channelers indistinguishable form each other. There are already bonuses in being a superb channeler - you can channel more weaves at a single time, weave more in the long run, and additionally you hold upper positions in the power hierarchy that is present in the White Tower. And as weaves go, these upper channelers can master more one element weaves, and multidisciplinary ones enabling them to do amazing and really destructive things. But even the average class of channelers, whatever that may be, the mediocre, average, or moderate status should still have some advantages to them given the process that is required to ultimately use the One Power in the MUD. Don't endorse a policy that truly promots the acceptance of only the elitist of channelers, the ultimate result will be a lack of players as they grow frustrated with not getting the -perfect- channeler, and from an RP perspective you lose the power hierarchy that was prevalent in the books. It's hard enough to get a channeler, I think that after two years of being locked up in the Tower you should come out of it and realize it was worth it. Every channeler is strong in at least one element - give them that strength so no one looks back on two years + dedicated to the atmosphere of the MUD. Everyone that strives to be Aes Sedai ultimately wants to play in their world, and part of that benefit is getting to play there, but the other thing is being a force to be reckoned with on the playing field. And if you don't believe me, then why not create a Mediocre channeler from scratch, send her all the way through the White Tower, and then decide whether or not things are as they should be... But since you're not going to do that! Just trust me Please re-consider the channeling policy. Lillian

OK, for obvious reasons my name has been supressed to stop everyone coming down on me like a ton of bricks. That being said i must agree with most if not all of the things Lillian said concerning channelers in general. (The White Tower Stuff i have no idea about because MALES can join ) But as a channeler you expect things to be a certain way, you OBVIOUSLY want power.....and when you get it you think....awesome, i can finally have what i want. Then you test your strength against another.....you realise that either you are both WEAK or the oldbie your testing yourself on is incrediably powerul and YOUR weak. At this point you do one of two things...... deal with it or delete, now as hard as it is to get a channeler....its even harder to get a male channeler, so the second opinion isnt used very much...... All this being said, along with what Lillian has said leads to one conclusion, if a male channeler is found out by an older Sedai.... Leave, quit, delete cause you are going to have NO CHANCE, that sedai is gunna shield you, subdue you and off you go to the White Tower to be gentled and end up a retard! Fair enough we male channelers dont get together much so general strength in the one power isnt really known, but in the books wernt males naturally MORE powerful then females? The two other MCs i know of arnt any stronger then me.....we are all weak as....you think killing that butterfly is hard Lillian? Pffft, at least you have the different weaves that help you in game. We are left with basics and the few that we can find on Trainers. Im not sure how to fix this, maybe we should all hope for a chrismas bonus....but then again, thats random and might make us even weaker...... We play channelers because we wish to be channelers, the RP is great and those that join the tower do put alot of effort in to reach Aes Sedai. Not to leave out the other clans who sometimes have to put in even MORE work. Which to me is just strange Any Admin who want to talk to me personally about this, im sure you know who i am, if not, leave your name in this thread and ask me to contact you. I will, as i think this is a very serious issue.

**DISCLAIMER: I would like to reiterate the initial statement by Lillian in saying that this is not meant in a negative manner towards the Immortals. It is incumbent to reaffirm this because as mortals we are greatful to have a MUD to play**.
My response to Lillian's post is personal and touches on a few of the points she made. However, it still encompasses the general thought and purpose of her post; which is the success of Mirrors Mud.
Ultimately, the existing player base of Mirrors including the few newer players that have trickled in through the past three months or so have come at the recommendation of older players who have been here for some considerable amount of time in the excess of at least one whole year.
The motivation to respond to Lillian’s post stems from the fact that I share some of her feelings regarding the White Tower. Now do not automatically get upset and think that I am unaware that the combat system is being worked on, as well as the talent system and the addition of new races. Not to mention the changes to showtime, the ‘who’ list and all the little things that have been added, such as the wilder event and general odds and ends to make everything work smoother and more complete. ALL to promote and inspire players to come and join the MUD and enjoy their time and become a part of the Pattern, so to speak. At the same time, the last thing I would want to see is all this work be done to have newer players say, “Screw this!” and leave; which in my opinion defeats the objective of having a successful MUD.
I have been playing for over three years and yes, at times I have lost interest and burned out to take a break. That is a normal occurrence for anyone who envelops themselves into a game of any kind. However, it is one thing to take a break because you must tear yourself away from the fun and excitement as opposed to having to remove yourself due to anger, frustration and a general feeling of neglect. I have taken both types of breaks. As a player I am fully aware of the time and effort that is required by the Immortals to create this MUD. I am also not ignorant to the fact that I cannot begin to understand what is required in terms of patience and knowledge as I am not a coder and am in no way responsible for actually developing the mechanics -ie. Scripts, triggers and code -that actually create a game to be played. Most importantly, I know that everyone has REAL LIFE to deal with. I do not want to dampen the importance of this in any way. I know changes take time.
That being said, I think there is a fine line between the concept of realism and simply making things to suit. I agree with Lillian that the channeling system is unfair. Before the updates, Female Channelers in the Tower were able to weave whichever weave they obtained a healthy amount of times to do considerable damage to a foe and not worry about stilling themselves. Also, depending upon elemental roll, we were able to get one or two mass damage weaves. I myself was able to get ‘Hail’. Now, post-update as stated by Lillian, the amount of weaves allowed to go off per round has not changed, but the SP required to execute the weave has increased –what feels to be- exponentially. Which, if adhering to the premise of the books and maintaining realism: is unrealistic. Channelers are meant to be over-powerd, ridiculously so, and part of their training is to learn how to not let that determine their actions as they are globally disliked. They have to take the Three Oaths and they have to learn that the One Power is not a solution to every problem. This is not reflected in the current channeling system. I feel that it is catered to the higher powered channelers because even though they suffer the same SP deduction per weave, they are still excessively powerful and not to mention they have the ability to obtain combination-mass damage weaves and can therefore be more effective channelers. There are a series of weaves that have HIGH multiple element requirements and it is understandable that as a Moderate channeler I will not be able to weave them. That is fine, but the fact that I can only weave four relatively damaging weaves and nearly expend all my SP and still have a trolloc ‘kicking my butt’ isn’t realistic when Moiraine –a Moderate channeler- toasted trollocs in Book 1 – Eye of the World all night and it was only after the night leading into the morning did she require the use of her angreal. Also, in New Spring, she killed one trolloc with one fireball during her Aes Sedai test (and multiple others). In addition to that, limiting weaves learned based on Ajah as opposed to elemental roll is also unfair and not consistant with the books as channelers obtain weaves here based on their elemental strengths.
I just feel that with the ranking limitations present within the White Tower and the automatic frustration that results it would be somewhat of a morale booster to have the members say, ‘Okay, I will have to stick through this and grit my teeth to gain the Shawl, but when I do, it will all be worth it.’ No one plays a game to when they finish it, say, ‘Well that was a waste. Why did I do that again?’ It is time consuming and taxing to write ranking tests and get all of the Immortals together to rank an individual in the personal manner that the Immortals put so much care into. It is appreciated because I had an amazing Accepted and Aes Sedai test on Lilla and am greatful for the time and care that was devoted for me at that time. This is just one of the things that makes Mirrors MUD superior to others and as players we know this.
I have made Mirrors a wonderful place for me to spend my free time and I come back because as with a lot of other players we are emotionally invested in it and we want it to thrive as the amazing MUD it is, but I fear that with some of the aspects that exist, not many people will be willing to stay and enjoy it as the rest of us do and have done for so long.
Thank you for taking the time to read my opinions and feelings. I appreciate it.

This post will be forwarded to Max and Shawny so that they can make a judgment on it. Guys, as lovable as you are, do you think we could get angry with you? Perhaps if you called our efforts a waste or worse, then... but you went to obvious lengths to assuage us of that. The next step, is either changing it gets denied or approved. If it gets approved then Maxim and shawny will change it as seen fit to fix this problem. BUT it never hurts to have more opinions about a problem when you go to fix it, especially when the opinions are from two of the most active players I've seen short of wingnut and wagnall. Come up with as many ideas as you can with the pros and cons of each. post them here. No penisering, no rudeness, no idiocy, this isn't an argument. Lets find a fix

Okay well the goal of my letter is to ultimately question two things, really:
A). How do we have equal payoff to the work put into a White Tower character? B). How do we differentiate the levels of channelers we have? C). How can we give perks?
A). I think the payoff should be, as I mentioned, getting to play in the Aes Sedai world, but also being competitive on that playing field. And how do we do that? Well we spend all our time training in the One Power, what good is this spent time unless ultimately there is a payoff in what we have been training? Why should a Mediocre channeler take just as much time training as an Immense channeler if the Mediocre one is ultimately going to have little use of the One Power? We can reason this out by still giving perks to the weaker channelers so that even they can agree that they are pretty cool and worth keeping. This allows us to have a power hierarchy in the White Tower just like in the books, and also would provide it so that everyone isn’t striving for only the best.
So the pros and cons of making weaker channelers stronger: Pros: They still are worthwhile to keep so as to maintain White Tower RP, and they feel good about the training they have done in the White Tower. Cons: Balance issue of having every channeler be strong.
In regards to the con. I think that channelers should be the strongest entities in the game, but not invincible. Just like in the books.
B). How to differentiate the channelers? They are already differentiated in that the stronger ones can weave more at one time, and they also have a larger tank of saidar to empty. I don’t know the full scope of weaves available, my expectations are that generally, there are weaves only available for a Superior channeler, and maybe the strongest of Immense or Excellent channelers in that element. Same applies as you go down the line. Once again, I don’t know the true nature of this, but am only guessing and suggesting. So here we have differentiation amongst single element weaves, the strongest channelers have the most exposure to them while some of the lower ones have overlap since they may be just as strong as someone above them in a particular element. Additionally, the interdisciplinary weaves appear to have high requirements making it so that an area damage weave or otherwise can only be afforded by the strongest of channelers in particular elements. The problem here is that some channelers have had their elements spread thin excelling in one or two elements that disallow them to afford the area weaves or others. Now not everyone can have everything, but I think balancing the requirements may be in order. Make weaves that one might think require heavily on the water element with a little air and earth, per say, lower the requirements to something reasonable so that a strong channeler with a thin element spread still has a hope of wielding this. And thus, you continue to have differentiation at the level of being able to learn single element weaves, and area weaves, but more options from the lower levels that, once again, make themselves more worthwhile as channelers.
Pros and Cons: I think this would be an ultimately fair system with even the lower channelers being able to do damage, and the occasional gift of strength in elements enabling more overlap with the top channelers. The potential con is that the upper channelers don’t find themselves to be worthwhile – I don’t think this to be true though since they will always have more weaves than anyone below them. Additionally, perhaps we face a balance issue.
C). How to make perks? Like I’ve said. Just make the lower channelers more worthwhile, if they’re strong in Earth, give them an Earth weave that can really pummel something without having them pass out from exhaustion. If they’re an upper level channeler they have the single elements, and maybe one or two area weaves as a result of their superiority in an element and decency in two others. In other words, don’t make the spread of weaves so thin across the board, with a select few being able to control the most while the others finish off their 1-2 years in the Tower having to rely on their dagger or sword which ultimately fails to make them any different than their unchanneling counterparts.

**NOTE: I apologize that it has taken me this long to post my ideas as per Belgar’s suggestion. I hope to have more, but these are just the ones I have for now. These are ideas, IDEAS. I know they have to go through a finalization process, but after speaking with some players, this is what I could come up with so far as a general consensus. So remember that you love me! ** Again, this is my list. No arguments, comments or filler. Well, at least trying to keep it in check. So, here we go in no particular order: 1. Allow each Ajah to have all available weaves at their teacher. However, there is a selection of weaves that are Ajah specific; keep those as master weaves. The rest, learn up to 70 as usual. Pro: Each channeler won’t feel cheated. As well, it will be keeping with the books, seeing as they will still only learn weaves based on their elemental ability and master only those they can obtain for their specific Ajah. Con: Less difference between ajah weaves. 2. Lower the elemental requirements for the higher, mass-damage weaves that currently, only older Aes Sedai are able to receive. Lower the points by ten per element. Pro: There is a greater potential for lesser powered channelers to obtain better weaves. Con: Lesser differentiation between stronger and weaker channelers. 3. With a lowering of the elemental requirements of the higher mass-damage weaves, create a handful of newer ones that would have the same standards as the current mass-damage weaves do. Pro: The stronger channelers will still have weaves that no one else could possibly attain. Con: Weaker channelers will feel slighted, but can suck it up if they get the other ones. 4. Increase the HP damage delivered by the weaves. If they are going to take this much SP from us, at least let even the weaker ones be more effective weapons when being used. Pro: All channelers can be more effective destroyers of evil! (Cause that’s all we’ll use the weaves for, really) Con: Channelers will be more powerful. 5. Everyone is still a little unhappy about the move loss when walking around; including myself. I’m not saying to make it as it was before the update, but it is still a bit too high. Pro: Everyone will be able to move longer without resting and not having to wait two seconds per room. Con: People will be able to move faster. 6. Make regen of SP faster. It take forever for myself; a moderate channeler to regen when not hungry or thirsty and sleeping. Whereas an immense channeler with more SP can regen their SP to refreshed in the same time. Make it balanced. Pro: Channelers, though at different strengths will still have similarity. Con: Stronger channelers will take longer to regen. But are still able to execute more weaves. 7. Redistribute SP so that at ‘weary’ the channeler is at 80% of their SP used as opposed to what seems like 50%. Since after Weary it’s spent, exhausted, drooping, haggared then near death. 5% per level before stilling. **cringe**. Allow for more weaves to be executed much like before the update. Pro: Channelers will be more effective and be able to weave more. Con: Chanelers will raise weaves quicker. 8. Make the Mistress of Novices able to automatically give the CP for perfecting weaves. Unless Shawny likes doing that, then in which case…nevermind. Pro: Let shawny have a break from keeping track of yet another thing. Con: Not having Shawny control it? A whole other code/script to write. 9. If additional weaves are made to accommodate the power level of stronger channelers, or just for more versatility and choice; allow more weaves to be learned per rank so Tower folk won’t miss ranking. They will be occupied longer once classes and chores are maxed. Pro: Less pressure for ranking tests by immortals. Con: More weaves need to be implemented. 10. The concept of being Aes Sedai is that they are “professionals” at using the One Power. Even in the books, an Aes Sedai will know when they are too tired, and what they are capable of weaving, right before they can’t weave anymore at the risk of stilling. As a player, sometimes, you over spam, or hit the enter button too many times and in combination with lag, you run the risk of going to drooping of even haggard. The suggestion is that there should be an auto release at drooping, for “Teaching Accepted” and higher, as they are more proficient with the One Power. Granted, by the time we get to Sedai we watch out channeling level like hawks, but it’s a fail-safe. Also, a reward of sorts. Pro: Protects channelers from stilling in case of error. Con: Younger channelers do not get to have this advantage. Conclusion: These are my ideas. I took Belgar’s advice and came up with a bunch. Even if some make no sense, maybe a compromise can be made with regards to some and it can work. Thanks again for taking the time to read this.

I really enjoyed reading Lillian and Lilla, and yes even Belgar(!)'s posts. I am a Moderate channeler. Lilla and Lillian have gotten a reroll since these posts have been made, but that doesn't make their points any less valid. I've never gotten a reroll, but would love one. Not so I can be an excellent or immense channeler like everyone else (honestly I just wanted -A- channeler, I was going to play her whaever her potential, and thats exactly what I ended up doing), but just so I can learn Fire weaves past Light. I'm a rank 5 Novice and these past three weeks 3 new novices joined us. granted one is a wilder and they are supposed to be powerful, but two of them are already at mediocre out of whatever their max potential is. I'm still at Weak out of Moderate thought, even if it's due to my deficiency in Fire. Okay, that's fine. I actually RP my weakness in Fire (heh and Water). In a way it's kinda cool coz it mades me feel like my character is unique. But other times I can't help but get frustrated and feel like it makes me look like a lazy or stupid novice coz i learn and i learn yet my strength never seems to increase, but others below my rank and considerably below my rank are progressing in the One Power by leaps and bounds! I've mastered all the weaves I'm allowed, and have everything else at 70. I guess I could tell myself to feel better in that channies with high potential will progress faster, but why is that? Strength doesn't mean you are particularily dextrous or skillfull at weaving. I put a lot of work into my weaves. And yes a lot because I tire easily and rest often. But I''m still at Weak and that frustrates me.I'm not here to whine, I made my character over two years ago and I haven't been rerolled because the first year I simply didn't know about it because I was so newb, and I think it took me 14 tries to get a channeler, so it's possible I missed the reroll that year. The year after that, I had quit ALL muds so that I could get my RL in order. It;s in order, so I'm back, unfortunately I came back ater rerolls and hadn't played all year so I missed out again. Oh well. =) I am still going to play my character even if I miss the third reroll in three years!)because I have faith that I can take her places despite the fact that I feel she is one of the weakest channelers in the Tower even though she is Moderate potential. Moiraine and Siuan were anything but weak. Please consider giving us "weaker" channelers something to hope for, and make it so that superb or immense or possibly even excellent channelers are more like icing on the cake instead of something that every player who has a channie should hope for. Now Lilla had some VERY good suggestions on how to go about this. As did Lillian, but I'm on a laptop so I can't type very well so I just quoted the last post which happened to be Lilla's. My comments/additions to her ideas are in PARENTHESES. (YES! This is a great idea! This may help players who have "weaker" channelers feel like their character has other strengths even though they don't have an "immense" sp pool, yet the "stronger" channelers will still feel special.) 8. (YES! Coincidentally I just approached Shawny about my cp awards for weaves just yesterday. I had quit the mud during the time that the policy for cp rewards for weave learning was imped.I did not know that it was something a player or an imm had to do for us. That's kind of tough considering I'm a Novice and I can't RPishly be like "Aes Sedai can I get rewarded for studying my weaves so well?" So I had to go OOC and ask a player of an AS, which makes me feel bad too coz I'd prefer not having to, you know? I ended up approaching Shawny who now has to look through god knows how many bazillions of records before deciding what to do with me. A script is a hassle to make, I agree. But you make it once, and you never have to do the work for it again. PLus it helps the players be a little more self sufficient. Possibly, make it so that a player can go to Merean and say Aes Sedai I have mastered so and so weave (99%), or I have learned so and so weaves to my full capacity (70%) and have her issue cps to us then. Obviously the script has to be error proof in that a player can't abuse Merean's poor memory and have cps rewarded for the same weave(s) more than once.) 9. (Another great idea. Or maybe make one's strength in an element not be in respect to their overall strength, thereby allowing them to learn the "cool doom" weaves, but just not be able to use them repeatedly like a Nynaeve channeler would, but be able to use them in dire instances like Moiraine did with fists of Trollocs, or with her angreal when she was tired. Hell even if immense/superb channelers do more damage with those weaves I won't care. I'll just be happy I'm no longer doing 13 dmg per weave. I don't know if I explained that appropriately. Ie: I am moderate channeler, and I seem to be strongest in Air and Earth atm, and weakest in Fire, and then Water. My spirit seems to be decent. I dont know how far I'll be able to learn Air and Earth weaves coz I'm only Novice. But I will be very disappointed later on if I find out that I won't be able to learn weaves just because I'm a Moderate channeler, and not because I was deficient in a certain element. Meaning I am strong in Air and Earth, I feel that this means I am more dextrous at these two elements and possibly they tire me less than the others (I remember Moiraine being quite sucky at Earth) meaning I shuld be allowed to learn "cool doom" earth air weaves, even if I can't weave them as much as a stronger channie can, or do as much damage. Same goes for Cure whatever wounds and Healing. I hope that my deficiency in Water means that I may learn healing weaves up to a certain point and possibly that I may not heal as well as others who are stronger IN THE REQUIRED ELEMENTS/NOT IN THE OP AS A WHOLE) 10. (This is a good idea imo, and does not sound too hard to implement, though I could be wrong because I don't know how to do that sort of thing. Or might I suggest having Trina and Davna Sedai in the Novice training halls, have a % chance to cut off an overchanneling Novice so that those who DO burn themselves out..well it was their fault for breaking rules and channeling w/o Accepted or AS supervision anyways.) =) Anyways, I really do hope that my post as well doesn't rub Imms the wrong way. I do appreciate what you've all done for us, and the fact that you do give out rerolls to give some of us weaker ones a chance, it's not your fault I haven't been able to capitalize on any. But please throw a bone to those of us players who do not have an immense/superb channeler, yet still continue to play and do their best despite their wondering how effective they will be later on. I think it's fine for the moment that most of our Sedai and even some of our Novices (future Sedai) are really strong. Most if not just some of us will be Sedai when the MUD opens. But I would hope that rerolls in the future will have some sort of restriction considered, especially when we leave beta and the MUD is fully ready. The immense channies that we have now can stay at the top being the heads of whatever Ajah, but it's not very rpish to give every channie a chance at becoming immense as well. -Iliana-
